‘Supreme Court lets employers opt out of birth control coverage’
Employers can officially cite religious or moral objections when denying health insurance coverage of birth control, according to a ruling from the Supreme Court last week. The decision upholds the Trump administration’s stance that the Affordable Care Act requiring employers to cover contraception is a “substantial burden on the free exercise of religion.” Beyond the obvious, there are two things to understand about the practical effects of this ruling: Up to 126,000 women could lose contraception coverage as a result of the decision, and it will disproportionately impact women of color, low-wage workers, and LGBTQ people. Take note of our wording there: “choosing” because opting out of motherhood can be a choice with explanation or qualification, and “childfree” because “childless” has an entirely different meaning.
