Following the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which reversed Roe v. Wade and grants states the power to regulate abortion access, more and more companies have been expanding their job benefits to cover the cost for employees to travel out of state to access abortions.
The aftermath of the decision is still unfolding, but employers have been swift in taking action to support their employees' health and safety in a few different ways:
-
When possible, many companies have added or enhanced abortion coverage under their group medical plans using language not specifically tied to abortion. For instance, a company might state, “We’ll cover any procedure not able to be completed within 50 miles of the employee’s home.” Then, abortion-related travel costs and benefits are simply incorporated into the coverage of an existing employer-funded health plan and are billed through insurance.
-
Other companies are contracting with outside providers, such as Planned Parenthood, and are sent an anonymous bill for their employees’ abortion services. Both this method and the first method allow for more employee privacy, since there’s a separation between the employer and the medical services.
-
Finally, some companies are providing benefits completely outside of their health plan. For example, some have created a relief fund to pay expenses for employees—and their dependents—who need to travel to another state or are offering a one-time bonus for the travel and procedure costs.
Here are just a few of the companies that have announced financial support, travel assistance, and expanded benefits for employees who need to get abortions.
