The United States is one of the only countries in the world to guarantee no maternity leave, paid or unpaid, to its workers. With some exceptions, maternity and parental leave is largely at the discretion of employers. As of 2018, about 30 percent of employers in the U.S. offer some sort of maternity leave to workers, according to the Society for Human Resource Management, up from about 16 percent in 2011.
The average length of maternity leave offered by the companies that make our list is 19 weeks, though it should be noted that some companies provide full pay for only a portion of afforded leave. Number-one Zillow (4.1 stars) offers 16 weeks fully paid maternity leave.
The outlier is number nine on our list: Netflix (3.9 stars), which offers 52 weeks of fully paid parental leave.
Our list of best companies for maternity leave is based on anonymous ratings and reviews from current and former employees of the companies who’ve rated their maternity leave policies.
