Empowerment is a deeply personal concept, especially when it comes to building a successful and fulfilling career. For some, it’s about breaking down barriers in traditionally male-dominated spaces; for others, it’s about cultivating the confidence to take on new challenges or lifting others as they climb.
Regardless of how empowerment is defined, a supportive environment is key—and that’s something Intuit, the global technology company behind TurboTax, QuickBooks, Mint, Credit Karma, and Mailchimp, understands well. With a mission to “power prosperity around the world,” Intuit reflects this goal in how they develop their employees, fostering a culture that prioritizes inclusion, growth, and the ability to make meaningful contributions.
To hear more about ways Intuit empowers employees, we spoke to two women at the company, Juliette Stancil and Kamren Coutee. How do you personally define empowerment in your career?
Juliette Stancil: “There’s a saying I use often that sums up my perspective: ‘Stay ready so you never have to get ready.’ It’s my reminder that empowerment is the outcome of preparation. Of course, that doesn’t mean I have all the answers, but every experience has taught me something new, so I embrace opportunities and challenges. When those experiences come to an end I have the value of those lessons.”
Kamren Coutee: “Empowerment in my career means having a supportive environment, leaders who are willing to sponsor me, and resources to pursue opportunities for growth. This comes with a strong feeling of confidence, a safe space to make mistakes, and an environment where I feel open to voicing ideas. Continued learning and growth is a priority for me, and it’s important for me to feel that I’m using my maximum potential to make meaningful contributions to the world around me.”
Who has been an empowering figure or role model in your professional journey, and what did you learn from them?
JS: “My first year after law school I moved to Chicago and connected with a mentor who helped guide and navigate my career decisions at a time when I didn’t have that clarity. She was smart and successful, but humble. She was extremely busy, but always made time for me. And, she was a servant leader-- nurturing, coaching, and mentoring young legal talent. Her kindness gave me insights and confidence I might not have otherwise developed.”
KC: “My incredible mother has been a role model for me throughout my personal and professional journey in life. She has spent her entire career on her feet, supporting the local school districts and day care centers through various roles from childcare, transportation, mealtime, and custodial work. I cannot remember a time when my mom wasn’t working at least two jobs at once. Through a lifetime of regular work days spanning up to 18 hours long, my mother takes her pride in her work and serves her community through early mornings and late nights, while never sacrificing her support for her family and loved ones. Although our jobs are vastly different by description, I have witnessed resilience, grit, and a value for service that set the stage for how I approach my own career. Most importantly, I have learned that family and health should always come first. I am grateful for all that I have learned in my mother’s shadow, witnessing decades of hard and honest work.”
What role does workplace culture at Intuit play in fostering empowerment for women?
JS: “Gender parity and inclusion is ingrained in Intuit’s DNA; in fact, many of our leaders are women, including my reporting chain up to the head of our legal organization! We also have women-centered employee resource groups and benefits that support women at every stage of life including pivots and changes in family dynamics. Intuit even has a special program for women who are re-entering the workforce after extended leaves, usually from having to serve as a caretaker for family. Being in an environment where you are able to witness the success and value women bring is energizing.”
KC: “Workplace culture plays a crucial role in fostering an environment of empowerment for women. Having mentorship programs in place is an incredible way we are able to continue empowering and supporting women. A culture of continuous learning also empowers women by providing resources and access to learning and mobility opportunities. Additionally, our flexible work policies are one of the best ways we can support our employees by providing the autonomy to create balance in work life and home life.”
What advice would you give to help women find a company that supports them?
JS: “Regardless of your profession, it’s important to find a company where you feel valued from day one. Trust your gut. If you don’t see recognition of the value you bring to your organization, or you don’t feel supported in reaching your career goals, that’s probably not a place you feel fulfilled or satisfied. Of course, you can always decide that something else about your career matters more. Maybe it’s the flexibility of your working arrangements, or the benefits, or the pay, but you should know what it is. As a practice, I set aside time at least twice a year to score my employment experience against those things that are priorities for me. I’d encourage others to do the same. It's amazing what purposeful reflection can show you and once you have that information you can make the best decision for you, your career, and your family.”
KC: “My best advice would be to lead with your values in your search. Which company do you feel is aligned with the impact you want to bring to the world around you? As a first generation, low-income college graduate, I feel very passionate about building bridges to education, career opportunities, and financial literacy for all, which is why I found a great home within Intuit’s mission. Also, spend time researching the company culture. Don’t forget to ask about key programs in place for internal growth, employee resource groups, and work-life balance. Learn more about the company’s leadership, and trust your instincts. It’s important to pay attention to how you’re feeling about the people around you while you’re interviewing. Are they welcoming, encouraging, and transparent?”
What do you envision as the next steps toward achieving true empowerment for women in the workforce?
JS: “A lot can, and often does, change quickly. The progress of women in the workforce is no exception, so I am hopeful we will see a meaningful increase in the representation of women and people of color as Fortune 100 CEOs and senior leaders. I’m also encouraged by the progressive conversations about mental health and wellbeing in the workplace because it’s an area of life that impacts so many of us.”
KC: “Continued learning and growth of our leaders is very important. Diverse and inclusive leadership is key to ensuring women are represented and advocated for at all levels.
Additionally, it’s important that we invest in rotational programs across all tech and non-tech functions to provide hands-on opportunities for career growth and internal mobility. Offering flexible work arrangements is also key to empowerment, by promoting health and wellbeing, allowing women to achieve their best work.”
